PORTLAND- Lewis and Clark Law Professor, Jim Huffman, has scheduled his announcement to run for Ron Wyden’s US Senate seat for Thursday, March 4th.
Huffman has been rumored for weeks to be the GOP’s choice candidate to run against Wyden in this coming November’s senatorial election. A facebook event created by the Huffman for US Senate campaign confirms that the professor will be challenging Oregon’s Senior Senator.
“The Jim Huffman campaign will be about the PEOPLE OF OREGON who are struggling while an out of touch political class uses the economic crisis to grab power and enrich their special interest patrons. The grass roots will be a huge part of this campaign, and so it is vital that we show up in force to support Jim in his kickoff,” said the campaign in its event notice.
Born and raised in Montana, Huffman earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Science from Montana State University after which he earned degrees from Tufts University and the University Of Chicago School Of Law. He joined Lewis and Clark Law School’s faculty in 1973 and has been a visiting professor at numerous universities in Oregon and abroad.
The polling firm, Rasmussen Reports released polling numbers last week comparing the support amongst voters for Wyden and Huffman. In the poll, Wyden lead over Huffman by 14% with 9% of voters undecided.
Wyden has represented Oregonians in the US Senate since 1996 and currently serves as the Chairman over two Senate Subcommittees.

I do so hope you can whip the socks off Wyden! All these people need to be taken down a notch or two!
Soooo-
How many Tea Parties has Professor Huffman attended?
Reading some of his stuff…he is a true conservative AND smart which probably means he is unelectable in Oregon…
Too bad…we could use more like him in office.
How many Tea Parties Ron Wyden attended? WTF cares as long as Wyden gets gone.
Hurray!!!!!!
Too bad we can’t boot that deadwood Merkeley, but I am thrilled that this year’s Senate race might offer us a real choice: Federal Engorgement Groupthink vs. keeping power as close to the individual as possible. For any Oregonian, no matter what party, that has to be a no-brainer.
I have not heard of Huffman before, but I’ll be there Thursday.
Godspeed.
Makes me wish I was still registered to vote back home!! I’d love to help get rid of that clown wyden and put someone in hatfield’s mould back in office. Good luck buddy!
Well great for the professor-but the voters in OR should have been out in force defeating this latest tax hike that passed. It’s gonna kill business in your state.
Even after hearing all the good news this weekend, this is proably the best. Everyone please support Mr.Huffman. Ron Wyden is a typical example of what is wrong with our Country. I have fought for our Country before and We must fight and win this one. This may be one of our last chances to win our Country back. I am so proud you Oregonians have a good choice this time. Work hard, fight and win. I will do my part from Mid-America.
Go, Huffman! He was Dean when I went to L&C, and he was the only one of the faculty willing to sponsor the conservative student group, Federalist Society. He’s also incredibly smart, down-to-earth, and very approachable. Best of luck, Prof. Huffman!
Actually, he has been eagerly supported by the Oregon tea party movement and is socially independent enough (not a religious right candidate - but not a squishy RINO either) to overcome the hurdles often faced by Republicans here.
He has my support!
Also, the polling data is pretty good. Wyden is now below 50% and a man who, at the time of the poll, was unannounced and generally unknown is within 14 points. I expect a bounce just from the announcement, and Huffman will win over many undecideds as he campaigns and gets his message and name out there.
I am hopeful!
Nobody is going to beat Wyden, he’s still popular and too well entrenched. Still, nice to see him be challenged at least.
If Scott Brown can do it in Mass., Mr. Huffman can do it in Oregon. If he’s against giving terrorists federal civilian trials and is in favor of putting them before Military tribunals he’ll be ahead of Wyden who voted against the Military Commissions Act of 2006.
He can distinguish himself from Wyden if he favors limited political terms; balancing the budget; limiting taxes; downsizing the federal government; freezing non-defense discretionary spending; tort reform; earmarks; checking federal powers under the 10th Amendment; and putting a stop to the irresponsible spending favored by Washington of both parties that will bankrupt our country.
i am thrilled, you have my complete support.
