Schrader missing in action

Congressman Kurt Schrader, Democrat representing Oregon's 5th Congressional District

BY SARAH ROSS

WASHINGTON- Rep. Kurt Schrader, Democrat Congressman from Canby representing Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, failed to vote on any of the reconciliation amendments presented in Monday’s House markup of the reconciliation of the health care bill.

While other Congressmen on the Budget Committee did not vote on certain aspects of the reconciliation bill, Schrader was the only member not to vote on any aspect of the bill.

This came after Schrader did not vote on all but one bill brought to vote on the House floor since Monday.

Late last week, it was reported that the Senate Parliamentarian, advisor to the Senate on standing rules of the body, ruled that in order for reconciliation to occur on the Senate bill, it first must be signed in its original form by the President.

Budget reconciliation is a process to allow one or more committees to bring legislation changing existing law to make spending, revenues, or the debt-limit consistent with the budget resolution.

The House is expected to vote on the Senate’s health care bill this coming week. If passed and signed into law, the bill will return to the Senate to continue the reconciliation process, potentially incorporating those aspects of the bill desired by the House and passed by the House Budget Committee Monday.

After multiple calls and e-mails to Rep. Schrader’s office, a spokesman for the representative was not available for comment.

As of Wednesday, Schrader is still listed as undecided in The Hill’s latest Whip Count.

Schrader is expected to face a tough reelection fight and is being targeted by Republican campaign groups. He also has drawn much controversy at his town halls.

Schrader has said time and again that he is undecided and then votes yes. I say if he is MIA let him continue to be missing. Even to the time he is voted out of office as he will be.

Kurt, I just can’t believe you can’t see that you need to get behind your President whom the People of this country have elected. What is wrong with you? If you don’t take the deal that is out there for the beginning of true health care reform , I will never vote for you again/ My parents went to Cornell too(Mechanical Engineering and Home Economics) My mother is now 88 and changed parties finally to the Democratic side. She is praying for health care reform and by God the time is now . Get on board and GET IT DONE. I am a registered nurse and have seen first hand what the stress of not having access to health care is doing to people through NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN. DO IT FOR THE PEOPLE OF OUR COUNTRY AND FOR OUR PRESIDENT. Thank you. Linda Sneed, Wilsonville, OR.

Yeah, right on! Never mind that it’s unconstitutional in sum (Congress has no authority to force the citizenry to purchase anything), that the machinations to get undecideds on board are achieved through underhanded and illegal means (circumventing previously established laws like the environmental protections put in place in Calif. at the expense of produce farmers), the Noble Cause is the only thing that matters.

Above all of Obama’s substanceless promises, that of change is the biggest hypocrisy of all. Scaring seniors, scaring minorities, exaggerating class differences and fabricating distinctions as needed - these are time-tested methods of deception long practiced by the Democrats. Nothing new here. Why should anything change? After all, the democrats have a long history of successfully fooling people.

Bill Clinton unabashedly praised Machiavelli’s The Prince - Obama’s the living embodiment. After everything’s said and done, the ends justify the means - right Ms. Sneed? It’s just like something our school superintendent told me 40 years ago: Sometimes, hypocrisy is a necessary evil. Looking back, I’m sure he was a democrat, too.

  5. John B Parker says:

    To the Honorable Kurt Schrader:

Do yourself and your constituents a favor, vote no this contrived and confused Health Care Bill. Nancy Pelosi is dead wrong, and the majority of voters will affirm this fact at the next election.
