PORTLAND- During a Friday conference call held by Republican Congressional hopefuls Scott Bruun of West Linn and Rob Cornilles of Tualatin to address rural Oregon, the two candidates discussed the fact that rural Oregon’s high unemployment rate exceeds that of most suburban and urban counties.
“There’s no question there’s an economic opportunity divide between, if you will, the west side and some of the rural parts of the east side,” said Bruun. “Bad macroeconomic conditions and policies affect every area, but if you’re already in an area that’s slightly oppressed, it’s even worse.”
Bruun noted that many rural communities suffering from high unemployment are “natural-resource-dependent communities,” adding that industries like timber, cattle, farming, and nurseries are the “heart and soul” of many of them.
He stressed the need for “getting on the right path” with natural resource policy, noting current restrictions on access to resources like dead and dying timber.
Bruun also described a need for a change in economic policies.
“These policies affect different areas differently, but we have to get on the right page to pro-market, pro-growth sort of tax and regulatory structure,” he said.
Cornilles addressed the large amount of “protracted litigation” involving natural resources in Oregon, using regulations in forest management as an example.
“When we see the development of our communities and our industries being held up through litigation, it’s really shameful,” he said, adding that “onerous” litigation and regulation are not compatible with job growth in Oregon.
Cornilles ended by stating, “We need government to either take action or get out of the way and let these responsible business owners and workers do what they do best; and that is cultivate the land, harvest the product and the crops here in Oregon.”

Cornilles To Hold Townhall Meetings: August 23-31

Please join me for a Town Hall Meeting in a community near you!
We know that a good representative is one who listens, communicates, and responds. Right now in the U.S. Congress there doesn’t seem to be much of that going on.
But in November we have an opportunity to change that.
Once I’m elected to represent you in the U.S. Congress, you will find me to be a Congressman that works tirelessly for you, listens to your needs, and responds to your concerns. I plan and pledge to be a representative that represents you.
But, for me to represent you best, I can’t simply wait until November to begin listening to you. That’s why I’m excited to let you know about an upcoming series of Town Hall Meetings that I will be holding throughout the First Congressional District.
I want to have an open, honest, and serious discussion with you about jobs, the economy, and the reckless spending going on in Washington today. Most importantly, I want to hear what you expect from your Congressman - and what you aren’t getting from your current elected officials today.
Join me at one of these Town Halls, and let’s resolve together to return responsible representation to the First District.
I hope you will take the time to join me for a conversation about the important issues of today, in a community near you. In addition, I also ask that you forward this email to all of your friends, family, and colleagues.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
